INDIANAPOLIS -- Lawrence “Boogie” Johnson, who coached Olympic gold medalist Dalilah Muhammad to a world record-breaking season this year, has been named 2019 Nike Coach of the Year, USA Track & Field (USATF) announced Wednesday. Johnson will be honored during the USATF Night of Legends event on Saturday, December 7 in Reno, Nevada. Other honorees will include the Jesse Owens, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Wing Award winners. In addition, USATF will induct the latest Hall of Fame class and honor individual and current Outdoor U.S. world record holders. Click here for more information. In a year for the record books, Johnson led Dalilah Muhammad to a 400m hurdles World Championships gold medal in Doha, where she clocked 52.16 to break her own world record of 52.20 that she had set just a few months earlier at the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Prior to Muhammad’s performance in Iowa, the world record had stood for sixteen years. In addition, he led Olympic champion Brianna McNeal to a top-15 world ranking as an IAAF World Championship finalist and a Toyota USATF Outdoors bronze in the 100m hurdles. "Boogie has again demonstrated that he is one of the world’s greatest coaches, and the consistent success of his athletes is a testament to that fact,” USATF CEO Max Siegel said. “USATF congratulates him on this richly deserved honor.” This is the second time Johnson has received the Nike Coach of the Year Award. In 2013, he was recognized after he guided Brianna McNeal (Rollins), Queen Claye (Harrison) and Kristi Castlin to phenomenal seasons. The Nike Coach of the Year Award has been given annually since 1998. Follow along with #USATF19 at the 2019 USATF Annual Meeting on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
