Joseph Gray - Q&A
Athletes are still keeping busy, but finding time to answer a few questions for us to help their fans get to know them better. This is our fourth installment with eight-time world champion ultra-runner,
Joseph Gray
.
USATF:
What is your favorite competition memory so far?
Gray:
About 1 minute from the finish line in 2019 in Argentina. I was less than 400 meters out from winning the World Mountain Running Championships for the second time in my career.
I thought back on the early part of the season where I was depressed, injured and thinking of leaving the sport. I knew I was moments away from doing what many thought I wouldn't do again and I just wanted a cell phone to call my wife, mom and dad to thank them for being there for me the last months when I needed them.
USATF:
How do you overcome adversity, especially now when things are so NOT normal?
Gray:
I think I've always just accepted adverse situations for what they are. If I can't change it, then I must adapt. Many situations arise that are difficult and as always, I adapt to the situation to maximize my chances of a positive experience even in a depressing time.

USATF:
What’s something you’re passionate about outside of your sport?
Gray:
Bringing attention to the lack of diversity specifically to the media and companies that offer sponsorships. I want to make sure the media and sponsors represent the USA. We are a melting pot of cultures and colors and media should represent that by highlighting minorities.
USATF:
Favorite recipe?
Gray:
Gnocchi ai Quattro Formaggi
USATF:
How do you adjust your eating/nutrition habits when on the road so much?
Gray:
One practice that I've done since my first international trip, be open! Don't get so attached to one type of food for specific times of the day. Chances are you may one day travel somewhere where the people don't eat exactly what you eat. Try something new and find out what athletes locally eat to get a better understanding of nutritional needs for the region.
