ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND -- The two day USATF Indoor Combined Events Championships got underway Friday morning at the U.S. Naval Academy’s Wesley Brown Field House. Annie Kunz claimed the women’s pentathlon title in spectacular fashion and Garrett Scantling holds a slim lead through four of the seven events in the men’s heptathlon. Results can be found here. Kunz (Chula Vista Elite / San Diego, California) set indoor lifetime bests in all five events on the way to tallying 4,610 points, making her the No. 8 all-time U.S. performer. The former Texas A&M soccer player started off with an 8.16 to win the 60m hurdles, and then cleared 1.82m/5-11.5, the best of all competitors. Her 14.97m/49-1.5 shot put was more than a meter better than her nearest rival, and she spanned 5.95m/19-6.25 in the long jump. The Pan American Games heptathlon silver medalist last year, Kunz finished off with a 2:20.17 in the 800m. Joining Kunz on the podium were Emilyn Dearman (Unattached / Jerico Springs, Missouri), who set a lifetime best of 4,451 to place second, and Shaina Burns (Unattached / College Station, Texas), who added 200 points to her PR with 4,375 to take bronze. Scantling (Unattached / Athens, Georgia), who is competing in 2020 after a three-year hiatus, dashed to a 6.93 in the 60m before long jumping 7.45m/24-5.5. A big 16.25m/53-3.75 in the shot put increased his lead, and he ended day one with a 1.99m/6-6.25 clearance in the high jump to total 3,490 points. Former Rice all-American Scott Filip (Dupage Track Club / Bloomingdale, Illinois) is 157 points behind with 3,333 in second, and Steven Bastien (Unattached / Ann Arbor, Michigan), fourth in the USATF decathlon last year, is third with 3,262.
