PRAIRIE VIEW -- Field events took center stage on the 11th and final stop of the USATF Journey to Gold - Tokyo Outdoor Track & Field Series, the USATF Showcase, capped by Valarie Allman’s win in the women’s discus and a surprise victory by Marc Minichello in the men’s javelin. Video highlights from today’s competition will be available later on USATF.tv+. Allman hit 67.74m/222-3 on her final attempt, a distance only she and two other American women have ever matched or bettered. The American record-holder at 70.15m/230-2, Allman also had a 67.07m/222-0 in the fourth round that was the 10th best performance in U.S. history. The reigning USATF U20 champion and a student at the University of Pennsylvania, Minichello unleashed a huge personal best of 79.24m/260-0 on his final attempt to snatch the win from Curtis Thompson and add almost seven feet to his previous best. Thompson ended up second at 78.82m/258-7. A jump-off in the women’s high jump gave Inika McPherson another opportunity to match her season best of 1.90m/6-2, and she did that to win over Shelley Spires. In the women’s hammer, Gwen Berry used a fifth-round 72.80m/238-10 to turn back Lauren Bruce of New Zealand, who had held the lead at 72.59m/238-2. One of four American men who has met the Tokyo qualifying standard in the men’s high jump, Shelby McEwen sailed over 2.26m/7-5 on his first try to take the win over Trey Culver, who cleared 2.21m/7-3. Joseph Brown was the men’s discus winner with a best of 60.18m/197-5. Rio Olympic 4x400m relay gold medal-winning teammates Natasha Hastings and Phyllis Francis duked it out in the women’s 400m, with Hastings coming away victorious in 51.45 ahead of Francis’s 52.01, both season bests. Hastings came back to pick up another win in the 200m with a 23.09 season best. 2019 World Championships men’s 4x400m relay gold medalist Wil London was an easy winner in the 400m at 45.45, and 2018 Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships winner Kahmari Montgomery was the runner-up at 45.83. More season bests gave Team USATF a pair of hurdles wins, with Evonne Britton taking the women’s 100mH in 12.80 and Ryan Fontenot clocking 13.65 for the men’s victory. Ashley Henderson’s season best of 11.45 was good for top honors in the women’s 100m, while Cordero Gray sprinted to a 10.30 for the men’s dash win. Coming close to the personal best she set earlier this season, Allie Wilson won the women’s 800m in 1:59.92, leading a U.S. sweep of the two-lappers as Abraham Alvarado went 1:46.11 for a convincing win and a lifetime best in the men’s race. Two other Americans picked up victories on the track with Deonca Bookman winning the women’s 400m hurdles in 57.02 and Elijah Morrow the men’s 200m in 20.61. Click here for full results.
