Tuesdays with Toyota spotlights USATF's most dedicated members. Meet Dan Mecca, a coach at Manhattan College and a member of the USATF New York Association from Florida, New York. I started with the New Jersey Association of TAC in the late 70’s early 80’s coaching a local track club. I became more involved as chairman of the association men’s and women’s track and field and development committees. I helped develop the Track portion of the Garden State Games. Then took over as Head Coach at William Paterson College and stayed involved with USATF and then moved onto coaching at Manhattan College. I was selected as an assistant coach for Team USATF for the 1990 World Juniors in Plovdiv, Bulgaria and I’ve coached NCAA All-Americans in every field event and the multis. I’ve coached athletes in every event from the 100 to 5000 and field events at the USATF Championships and NCAA Championships. I was the first head coach for the men’s and women’s combined program at Manhattan College and first president of the combined coaches association for the IC4A/ECAC Something I learned from my father, who was a Master Chief in the US Navy that served in WWII through Vietnam, is to “always try to do the right thing and serve with dedication discipline and drive to compete and win with integrity." That is something that I always apply when coaching athletes. One of my greatest memories with USATF was marching in to the 1990 World Junior Championship as part of Team USA for the opening ceremony. I’ve always seen coaching as what I am than what I do! I’ve gotten to live the American dream where I’ve made a living for my family doing what I love.
