FORT WORTH -- Strong winds impacted every event at the USATF Open Tuesday at the AP Ranch, but couldn’t keep Olympic legend Allyson Felix and Michael Cherry from stealing the show – she with her fastest 400m in four years, and Cherry with a lifetime best in the men’s 400m. This Continental Tour bronze level meet was the latest in USATF’s 2021 Journey to Gold Tokyo Outdoor Series. Video highlights from today’s USATF Open are now available on-demand on USATF.TV+. Felix, the Rio silver medalist in 2016 and a bronze medalist at the 2017 World Championships, ran her first 400m of the year and looked comfortable in clocking 50.88 to win by almost half a second. Team USATF women make up 24 of the 34 athletes that have hit the Olympic qualifying standard. Michael Cherry took advantage of a rapid early pace to win the men’s 400m with a lifetime best of 44.37, the second fastest time in the world this year. Reigning world champion Steven Gardiner of the Bahamas had a lead coming into the final 50m but stumbled and went down before the line to open the way for Cherry, who clipped .29 off his previous PR. Eight Americans hold the top 14 times in the event in 2021. In the throwing events, which were held at TCU, Rudy Winkler threw 79.69m/261-5 to take the men’s hammer, the second-farthest throw in the world this year behind his own world-leading 81.98m/268-11 at the USATF Grand Prix on April 24. Winkler owns three of the top five throws in the world so far in 2021. Maggie Malone threw a U.S.-leading and lifetime best 62.70m/205-8 in the third round to win the women’s javelin. Malone maintained her position as the No. 5 all-time American performer in the event. As the wind picked up for the 100m finals, Ronnie Baker showed why he is currently near the top of the world men’s list, striding away from the field to win by two-tenths in 10.39 against a 3.2 gust. Mikiah Brisco was the strongest and fastest in the women’s dash, powering through a -3.3 breeze to win in 11.43. Both hurdles finals were hampered by stiff headwinds, but Aaron Mallett overcame the less than optimal conditions to lead from the gun in the men’s 110m hurdles, running a technically smooth race into a stiff wind to win in 13.64 (-1.9). Christina Clemons blasted out of the blocks in the women’s 100m hurdles final and held the lead for the first eight barriers before Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico moved past her for the win in 12.84, with Clemons second in 12.92 into a 2.1 meters per second wind. Panama’s Gianna Woodruff, who recently set a national record of 54.70 at the USATF Golden Games at Mt. SAC, took an early lead in the women’s 400m hurdles and held off a late surge by Nnenya Hailey to win in 55.37. Hailey was second in 56.05. Overcoming a poor curve, Tynia Gaither of the Bahamas went past Candace Hill and Morolake Akinosun over the final 20m to win the women’s 200m in 23.11 (-2.6). Hill staved off Akinosun to take second by .06 in 23.11. For full results from the USATF Open, click here.
