Olympic gold medalist Valarie Allman bettered her own American record in the women's discus by a foot Friday at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, California, hitting 71.46m/234-5 in round two to tack on 30cm to the 71.16m/233-5 she threw last September in Berlin, Germany. It was the farthest throw in the world since March 1992. Allman opened her series with a 65.51m/214-11 before her big throw and added throws of 67.38m/221-0 and 65.93m/216-3 in the final two rounds. Her record is subject to USATF ratification. Photo Credit: Getty Images
