INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — Running the fastest indoor 5000m time ever by an American, Grant Fisher (Portland, Oregon) earned recognition as the sixth USATF Athlete of the Week award winner for 2022. Fisher, who was fifth in the 10000m and ninth in the 5000m at the Tokyo Olympic Games last summer, won the Hemery Valentine Invitational men’s 5000m at Boston University with a 12:53.73, more than seven seconds faster than the existing American indoor record. His time moved him to No. 5 on the all-time world indoor performer list and just missed the American outdoor record of 12:53.60. Fisher cut almost nine seconds off his own previous personal best. The top three finishers in the race bettered their national records, and Emmanuel Bor in fourth was also faster than the existing American indoor record. Other top performances from last week:
